Made Event At the Leeds College of Art

After all my hard work on the project the Made event finally took place. The shop was setup beautifully by both Bridget and Gina and a number of volunteers, the change in placement of the shop was decided upon as there was not enough space within the glass foyer. Bridget and a couple of helpers also made some bunting which decorated the event beautifully.
The flyers ended up reaching as far as a spa in Cleckheaton just outside of Leeds. The pop-up shop also took better profit on the second day as it was open throughout the day, but was met with a disappointing amount of sales during the Creative Networks event on the thursday.
Regardless of this each vendor that produced work sold something during the entire pop-up shop and gained good exposure for it's first trial at the Leeds College of Art Blenheim Walk building.

Made on Pop-up Events

Pop-up Shop Promotion - Pop-up Events

Amber was asking around in the studio today to see if anyone wanted to have a portfolio surgery with the Beautiful Meme. Unfortunately with the number of brief I am currently still working on it would be very hard to accept and still get all my work finished. I did however have a good luck at their website and am impressed by what they do.

I also noticed they did some work for a website that hosts notifications for pop-up shop events around Yorkshire, I've told bridget to get in touch and hopefully we will have our work displayed on their website as well.

Made Poster Printing

The made posters will be printed as cheaply as possible instead of digitally print the posters which would cost £75 I am screen printing the posters which should cost around £10 inc paper, inks, screen coating etc.

The tactile quality if a screen-print is also far more appropriate to the made event itself. I have costed up the cost of having the posters printed using a risograph printer which would give a similar effect:

50x A3 £25

The problem was the time for manufacture and delivery which is a total of 3 days manufacture + first class delivery. Unfortunately with just over a week to go there is not enough time.

Final Artwork for screen-print:

The posters were then fed through a laser printer with the black information detail. Costing: nothing.

Made Poster Revisions

After reviewing my design on the silk screen I was not happy and decided I could do better. I decided to go back and play around a both the the composition of the bag, how many there were and use of colour and layout.

The final design I have selected is the first, although similar to the previous design it uses less ink and sits well with the other promotional material. The red bags will be screen printed with the black being digitally printed over the top.

Badges for Ollie for Stamp

I've asked Ollie to print a few badges for the photo-shoot tomorrow for the yearbook. In terms of expanding the range it is important to cover everything, these could in fact be sold at the pop-up shop as well. And Ollie earned £5.00 aswell.

Made Bag Design Proposals

Bridget has decided upon simple bags for the pop-up shop with the logo to be embellished upon the side of both small and large paper carrier bags. I have proposed a range of ideas however the make the bags more of a feature design element of the shop and producing a range of cotton versions for a price aswell. I will propose the these to Bridget this afternoon.

Amendments for Bridget

Before we go to print with this flyer design Bridget requested a meeting so that we could go over a few more amendments. The dates had changed and the number of sponsors also which meant I had to re-jig the design a bit. To be honest bridget suggested adding more of the logos to the same side but I felt it now ruined the design a bit. I've also had a revise of the arrangment of the illustrations on the other side, to create a better balance in colour.

Full Made Typeface

After taking some time to expand the brief I produced a full typeface for the Made Project, I will attempt to put this into fontographer as soon as possible, but i will get some feedback from the crits today.

Made Poster Initial Ideas

After a meeting last thursday, it is clear my involvement in this event is going beyond design and I am somewhat co-ordinating the event. Exciting but I don't really have the time. For the event there has been some word of a private view, this to me seems that there will be a invitation only event for the opening of the pop-up shop. This I think would actually fail, students in particular might feel that there is something they have to sign up for or worse pay for entry. I believe we should market the shop as open using the flyers and further marketing the opening of the event using posters and other marketing tools on the first day.

Solo Press Print: Made Flyers

I will be handling all printing to ensure that the design of the promotional material for the pop-up shop is both consistent and runs at a high quality. For this reason I have been scanning both local printers and nationwide printers for quotes on the specifications of the design. The printed flyers I have been designing are A6 landscape format, other specifications include:

+ 300 - 350gsm recycled uncoated stock.
+ 1 colour design, preferably litho for brighter red spot colour.
+ Currently 5000 in quantity.

Team impression gave me a quote of £270 for a litho job but on a gloss stock.
They also quote 5000 flyers on a Matt stock digitally printed for £175.

Solo press however are an online printers and give clear and easy pricing for the jobs and a variety of different stocks which are on the way in a sample pack.

They quote £115 for 5000 A6 flyers on a fantastic pulp flyer stock. Perfect. I ran these via Bridget and will be ordered by the end of the week.

Made E-Flyer

Email reminder for applications for the MADE pop-up shop. The visual concept for the design was to communicated the different merchandise that could be sold within the store, whilst keeping a contemporary feel within the design.

Made Visual Inspiration

Visual inspiration from Head of Crayons, in particular of layout design and visual quality. Although I have decided that the colours are a strong red and black I feel it is important to recognise other options.

Made Poster Layout Experiments

Here I sampled various ideas for the layout of the Made posters used to gather interest from the vendors of the new pop-up shop. Based upon the concept of making things, the posters will be screen printed to co-inside with the making of things for the event.

Proposal to Bridget: Made

I pitched the name and design of the logo to bridget and she loved it. Thank god! As the shop is not going to be held for another 2 months I have plenty of time to prepare. I need to look at formats of marketing and get any quotes for printing. The costs of the previous shop should provide a guide. I proposed a range of vinyls that could be applied to areas within college, these need to be tested and approved.

Made Poster Mock-ups

To propose the concept of Made to Bridget I have sampled some layouts for the design of promotional material for the pop-up shop. I've tested 2 abstract typefaces for the event. I wanted to use a very decorative typeface set against a formal typeface to give it a swiss styling to the design, to communicate a sophisticated modern art styling to the design. Although these are still in the basics of design they will be useful in giving an idea for the pitch.

I have started thinking about stock choices and am considering an uncoated stock such as a cartridge paper would be suitable but I am very interested in using coloured stocks. I am unsure of how it will be printed but screen printing may better communicate the aspects of 'made' in making things by hand.

Made

Made is a new event at the Leeds College of Art. The college is opening its doors to host a new pop-up shop where the work and made products of some of its most talented students and graduates will offered for sale to the public.

The name is chosen to communicate the aspects of making/constructing things which are then obviously sold at the shop. Made also communicates not just the commercial aspects of Art & Design but the way in which we as creative practitioners make things for various applications within the various niches of design. Made communicate the aspects of taking ideas and physically forming it into something tangible like a product. Made is the physical manifestation of our work as creatives.
